DJ Afrika Bambaataa, the musical visionary and scene icon dubbed by Life Magazine as one of the most important Americans of the 20th Century, will be touring New Zealand and Australia this May.

Bambaataa – also affectionately known as Bam – is the founder of Universal Zulu Nation, a collection of socially and politically charged emcees, DJs, artists and break dancers. Over the last 35 years Bam has helped to shape the path of urban music and culture. He was also the person responsible for incepting the term ‘hip hop’.

Bam is also behind the iconic 1982 hip hop/electro funk classic Planet Rock, which is arguably one of the most sampled songs in history, with the likes of Paul Oakenfield, Westbam, George Acosta, LL Cool J, Mariah Carey and many others giving their own spin to the track. Rage Against The Machine also covered another Bam track, Renegades Of Funk.

DJ Afrika Bambaataa will be bringing all the flavour of a New York City block party to Sugar when he performs on Sun May 19. Tickets go on sale Mon Mar 11.
