Profilic Australian DJ, Adrian Thomas aka DJ Ajax has died after being involved in a car accident in Melbourne at around 1am Thursday morning. Thomas was believed to have run onto a road in Melbourne’s inner north suburb of Parkville where he was hit by a truck. Police reports say he died at the scene.
The news was broken by Sydney nightclub Chinese Laundry, where Thomas had been a resident for seven years, writing on their Facebook that the news was “absolutely heartbreaking” and that Thomas was a “great friend to everyone”.
Tributes have been flooding social media, with both the Australian and international music industry expressing their devastation and support for Thomas’ family and friends.
“RIP to Ajax, my thoughts are with all the Australian homies, I can’t believe this. Such a warm and generous dude, a real leader,” tweeted US DJ A-Trak, who will be in Australian imminently for Future Music Festival. Countless fans and artists have also shared their support, with Johnny Mackay from Australian indie band Children Collide tweeting that Thomas was “one of the best guys I ever knew”.
Thomas was one of the Bang Gang crew’s founding members and was voted Australia’s top DJ in 2006 and 2007 in the inthemix top 50 poll. He had ranked in the top five since 2005 and launched his own record label, Sweat It Out, in 2008. Sweat It Out have set up a tribute Facebook site here. Despite his popularirty, Thomas remained firmly grounded.
“It’s not a thing that I want to be the biggest and the best. I actually love doing what I’m doing,” he told former former Onion editor David Knight during one of the last times they spoke.
The cause of the car accident has yet to be released.
