To complement the worldwide screening of Fatboy Slim Live: At The Big Beach Bootique that happened on Fri Aug 31, with over 40,000 fans partying to Big Beach Bootique 5 at the Amex football stadium in Brighton, the DVD/CD compilation of the set has been released. Sadly, all Big Beach Bootique 5 seems to do is show Fatboy Slim AKA Norman Cook’s age and dwindling relevance in the current world of dance music. Instead of showing himself as a continuing pioneer of electronic dance music, Cook instead offers a relatively predictable and – regretfully – boring set. Cook’s efforts to mix in his own classic tracks Praise You and Right Here Right Now with those of the likes of Calvin Harris, Armand van Helden, Knife Party and mainstream pop fodder like Cee Lo Green’s Fuck You are sadly misguided. Praise You in particular gets thrashed throughout the set, acting as filler between more contemporary tracks until it is showcased at the end of the set in a mix that grinds to a halt instead of soaring high. The DVD doesn’t add much more life to the set either, mostly comprising of shots of drunken sweaty revellers making out with each other and an aged Cook dancing like your dad at your Hawaiian-themed 21st.

Live: Lisa Mitchell at The Gov, Sun Oct 28
With her latest album Bless This Mess taking a confident new leap, Lisa Mitchell narrowly avoids electrocution while back in Adelaide to perform at one of her “favourite venues in Australia”.

Live: Mama Kin at Jive, Thu Oct 25
It was a jam session in Adelaide’s living room, with everyone more than welcome to join under the soothing spell of miss Mama Kin. The ole house of Jive presented as always a definite ‘cosy vibe’ as described by the sultry songstress herself with couches dotted about the beer soaked floor…

Lawrence Arabia: The Sparrow Review
I’ve been slacking lately on my album reviews. Because of my tendency to procrastinate, I’ve had a rather tall stack of CDs sitting on my desk and mocking me for the past few weeks. It’s not like the music is bad either. In fact, there are quite a few albums…
