Hermitude Takes Australian Music Prize
Words By
- Melissa Keogh
New South Wales’ hip-hip duo Hermitude have walked away as history makers after becoming the first ever hip hop act to win the Australian Music Prize (AMP), thanks to their fourth studio album, Hyperparadise.
Luke Dubber “Luke Dubs” and Angus Stuart “Elgusto” walked away with a healthy handful of cash, $30,000 in fact, after competing against a shortlisted nine nominated artists and over 300 of 2012’s best albums, including Flume’s self-titled debut, Tame Impala’s Lonerism, The Presets’ Pacidica and Grand Salvo’s Slay Me In My Sleep.
The past year has seen Hermitude leave their mark on the Australian music scene after winning an AIR (Australian Independent Records) award, two SMAC (Sydney Music Art & Culture) awards, as well as ARIA and Triple J nominations.
Recent changes to the AMP submission process includes all Australian album releases to be considered, a removal of the entry fee, as well as the ability for artists to submit their entries digitally, rather than the typical CD/disk submission.
