Jai Paul Releases Self-Titled ‘Album’, Or Does He?

UPDATE: Jai Paul has taken to his official Facebook to report that the ‘album’ is in fact a series of demos uploaded without permission by an unknown party. “Please don’t buy, statement to follow later”, he writes. His BandCamp has also been shut down.
Within the past 24 hours the electronic community has been ablaze following the mysterious release of British buzz artist Jai Paul‘s debut album onto BandCamp. However, in the nature of all things on the internet, there is now question that the hotly-awaited Jai Paul album might not be Jai Paul at all.
Since first emerging in 2010 with his demo BTSU, which radio host Zane Lowe branded as ‘Hottest Record In The World’ on his BBC Radio 1 show, fans have hungrily lain in waited for Jai Paul’s official album release. In 2012 the digital whiz again whetted their appetites with a second glitchy single called Jasmine.
Yesterday ‘Jai Paul’ unexpectedly released his ‘album’ via BandCamp, allowing fans to freely listen and download it. However, questions began to arise once fans noticed the BandCamp account was registered only a few hours before the album’s release and that the quality of the songs was scratchy and poor – something not consistent with the usual super-svelte production of XL Recordings, who have produced acts like the xx, Vampire Weekend and M.I.A.
Regardless of its authenticity, the ‘album’ is awe-inspiringly good. A swarming, brilliant decoupage of bumbling synth, looping bass and tinkering samples, it definitely sounds the part. Download it here.
