Word Adelaide is hitting the streets this Aug 15 -18 to celebrate all things spoken word – including rhymes. As part of the event, a national-reaching Freestyle MC Competition will be held at Thebarton Theatre for MCs to compete in acapella, beatbox and instrumental rounds for the chance to win $12,000.

Competitors for the event will be divided into heavyweight, middleweight and flyweight competitors, with heavyweight acts including The Tongue, Purpose, Social Change, Manaz III and middleweight acts including Rapaport and Dliver.

Flyweight competitors will be able to take part in a series of heats held in Adelaide’s northern, central and southern suburbs, with successful competitors to progress to the competition final for a chance to win more than $500 in cash. Flyweight MC must be registered before taking part, register at the Word Adelaide website.

The event will feature showcase performances from renowned hip hop artists like Delta, Funkoars, Chase and Eloquor, with MC Fatface will serve as master of ceremonies and SA expat Simplex will carry out referee and hosting duties.

South Australian hip hop royalty Delta, Dialect, Motion, Trials and Legacy will be judging the event.

Adelaide MC Kimence (pictured) is just one of the rappers set to showcase her skills in the competition. Kimence has been an ambitious presence in the local hip hop scene for some time, becoming known for her tight flows and positive energy. Her solo album One View, which features production by Psycho Les (The Beatnuts), Suffa (Hilltop Hoods) and Simplex (Terra Firma)  is due out on Jul 5.

The Word Adelaide Freestyle MC Competition final will take place on Fri Aug 16 at Thebarton Theatre, headed up by PJ Murton (also known as Pulling Strings), Hilltop Hoods’ former manager. Check out the full event details below.
