With his new album Magna Carta Holy Grail slated for release early next week, hip hop juggernaut Jay-Z has dropped the first single off the upcoming record. The tune is called Holy Grail.
Overlaid by Justin Timberlake’s sweet croons, whom Jay previously worked with on The 20/20 Experience, the tune opens with an ominous piano hook before launching into rhymes about the often-trivialising life of fame – “can’t even take my daughter for a walk,” Jay raps, before adding “godammit I like it, bright lights I entice it.”
There’ s also the occasional synth bloop, a dub-inspired breakdown and a hat tip to Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit. Give it a spin below.
Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail will be released on Jul 9.
