Pub-crawls are a potent cocktail of pop culture references, loosely linked coursework theory, and coordinated t-shirts bearing puns as thought up by the state’s brightest minds. Coming up with a good pun is hard work, yet the wider community often grossly undervalues this unique skill. As such, we have documented the best pub-crawl themes from Adelaide’s finest tertiary institutions for 2016.
Flinders Medical Science Society – Trump Crawl, 8th April
Republican front runner for the American presidential race Donald Trump has been themed (or should that read “meme’d”?) for this year’s medical sciences pub crawl. The campaign slogan is “Make Pubcrawls Great Again” paired with the Pepe Frog alluding to the time Trump himself tweeted the meme.
Adelaide Business Student’s Society – Shake Your Assets, 7th April
What do you get when you add up liabilities and equity? Assets. There is no punchline to that joke, it was just the accounting equation.
However, full points to the ABSS for incorporating course content in to the event name. The pun is subject to personal interpretation: is it flashing your riches, celebrating your accounting spreadsheet balancing, or literally shaking your ass?
Bachelor of Health Sciences Association (Flinders) – AT⚡️GC : Highway to Health, 8th April
Health science student’s at Flinders have, for their pubcrawl, struck a perfect balance between bogan rock and science fundamentals. The theme pairs the chemical make up of DNA (that is, for those playing along at home, A-G-T-C) with the hook from ACDC’s cult classic of 1979. Points for an almost seamless segueway between two topics that would be impossible to bring up in one sentence.
Un-bloody-likely.
USASOE – Pubcrawl n’ Chill, 6th May
This is an engineering pub-crawl, but not THE engineering pub-crawl. Based at Mawson Lakes campus, the engineering society at Uni SA have gone for the ubiquitous catchphrase “Netflix and Chill”. Sadly, no points for reference to course work.
Adelaide University Media Association – Lee Lin Gin 20th May
The popular SBS Newsreader has been the subject of many honorable mentions lately, including a nomination for the Gold Logie, but none are quite as impressive as this. The Adelaide Media Association are toasting a glass of Gin for Lee Lin Chin. A totally apt pun for the budding news readers of tomorrow.
Glory, glory, media students!
