Banksy sets up super creepy ‘Dismaland’ theme park, Run The Jewels to play

Words by August 21, 2015

While you were sleeping, prolific street artist Banksy has gone ahead and set up Dismaland, the theme park of your nightmares.

The sinister amusement park opened this morning at the site of an abandoned seafront lido in Weston-Super-Mare in Somerset, England, and offers not creepy at all attractions like the Grim Reaper Dodgem, Jeffrey Archer Memorial Fire Pit, Pocket Money Loans and Water Cannon Creek. Described as “a festival of art, amusements and entry-level anarchism”, the site will be open for 5 weeks and also include works by Damien Hirst and The KLF‘s Jimmy Cauty.

Speaking to the BBC, Banksy said he’d got the idea to work on the site that had once been “popular with low income holiday makers” after peering through a gap in the fence earlier this year. He also notes that many of the installations require audience participation: “A dead princess is only complete when surrounded by gawping crowds with their cameras our, or the opportunity to photograph yourself pulling an expressions when a killer whale leaps from a toilet.” He goes on to describe Dismaland as “a theme park whose big theme is ‘theme parks should have bigger themes.’”

Not 100% grim however, Banksy has also rung in some musical friends to perform with Run The Jewels, Massive Attack, Pussy Riot and DJ Yoda all slated to hit the stage at the bemusement park.
