Brick + Mortar seeks Adelaide creatives for retail pop-up venture

Words by November 28, 2014

Brick + Mortar Creative is the first retail pop-up model of its kind in South Australia. Descriptions draw inspiration from co-working and hot desk spaces like St Paul’s or Hub Adelaide, while the creative arts and design aspect brings to mind The Mill. However, unlike these studio and office spaces, Brick + Mortar’s focus is retail.

The project is directed by hardworking entrepreneurs Elizabeth Donaldson and Brigid Dighton. The pair are setting up a “capsule store” showroom (of sorts), to act as the point of sale front-line for businesses that may not otherwise have a physical retail presence. Businesses that emerged as online stores or from studio space would be a perfect fit for the upcoming Norwood premises.

“It’s all about bringing the maker to market,” say Donaldson and Dighton. “For customers, Brick+Mortar has easy access, has great coffee, creative activities for adults and kids, and the opportunity to support local artisans making high quality products.  For tenants in one of our architect-designed capsule stores, it has all the benefits of a curated collaborative environment, short- to medium-term leases, competitive rent, and it’s in a high foot-traffic retail precinct. For the community, it’s a chance to interact with some of the creative talent in Adelaide.”

The space – which is in development and will occupy a building on George Street, Norwood – is unique. There are five large and three small pocket shops called “capsule stores” that are designed to be flexible retail premises. The five larger spaces are designed to suit studio space as well as a shop floor. Alongside these is a cafe, workshop and event space, a gallery wall and a children’s activity area.

Brick + Mortar is planning to open early next year, and is inviting expressions of interest from designers, artists, jewellers and other crafts people; Donaldson and Dighton would also welcome a providore selling local produce.
