The space behind Jack Ruby on King William St is about to undergo a temporary transformation through the unique vision of local designer Laura Davids with the help of Splash Adelaide.
The live space transformation will see the Westpac Plaza converted into a pop-up bar as onlookers engage with the changes happening around them.
“The public will be given the opportunity to watch as I erect false walls and build a pop-up bar fit-out around them,” Davids says.
The conversion will introduce some New Orleans street culture to the American-influenced diner, with Jack Ruby offering a southern inspired food and cocktails selection including popcorn crocodile, sliders and more. Wine, cider and beer will also be available, alongside live music by the James Brown Trio.
“I’ve always wanted to go to New Orleans,” Davids says.
“The food and jazz street culture really appeals to me. I think we need more of it in Adelaide!
“For the setting itself, I have drawn inspiration for the New Orleans swamplands, as I wanted something green, fresh and tropical in celebration of the beginning of summer.”
The event aims to get people thinking about the psychological effects of design and observing the changes in mood that can occur from changing environment.
Davids also hopes people will engage with the recycled materials used to create the revitalised space.
“A collection of very random recycled items will be re-purposed and incorporated throughout the installation. Through this I hope to evoke the minds of my audience and get them thinking of alternative uses of items which would otherwise end up in landfill.”
