Espionage Gallery, together with Splash Adelaide, is creating a magical outdoor exhibition inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which will be temporarily atop Rymill Park Island on Saturday, January 17.
The exhibition will bring the nonsensical world of Alice and her journey down the rabbit hole is being brought to life through an interactive exhibition in Adelaide’s very own wonderland. This lovable space in Rymill Park is already home to the iconic Adelaide bronze sculpture of Alice that stands perched above the White Rabbit, grinning Cheshire Cat, Dodo and the pair of Tweedles.
Follow the White Rabbit will feature more than 30 international and local artists, whose work will be displayed amongst Rymill Park’s natural surroundings – quite literally hanging from the trees – to create an unsettling carnival atmosphere, much like down the rabbit hole.
The Espionage crew has built an enchanting space like this before with their Studio Ghibli inspired exhibition, Spirited, last year at the Himeji Gardens which saw more than 3,000 people journey through the gardens in just one day.
Adelaide artists James Dean, Jenny Allnutt and So-Lou are among those who have been handpicked for the upcoming exhibition, with mythical and sometimes eerie art pieces that truly give a sense of wonder and absurdity. From realist paintings to manga illustrations, the event will go beyond any conventional exhibition, entertaining all ages and senses.
The park will also feature a hit of croquet, giant and regular-sized chess, market stalls, entertainment by jazz band Monsieur Swing and a free manga art workshop with Adelaide artist Tsunami Hee Ja. Dance and theatre group The Human Arts Movement will perform their popular Alice-inspired show Wonderland, that sold out to Adelaide crowds last month.
Entry to the exhibition is by donation, but everyone is encouraged to put on their best cosplay for free entry.
