The anticipation has been high but the wait is finally over. Fashion Icons – Masterpieces from the Collection of the Musée Des Arts Décoratifs, Paris is launching tomorrow at the Art Gallery of South Australia.
One of the most esteemed collections in the world, the exhibition aims to tell a dual story: the rise of fashion and how fashion is a mirror for how society and politics has evolved. And it’s all exclusive to Adelaide thanks to the hard work of Nick Mitzevich, the Art Gallery’s director and Pamela Golbin, chief curator.
This morning, we were lucky enough to be apart of the media preview and let me tell you, it doesn’t disappoint. Fashion Icons charts the history of fashion like the world has never seen before, taking us on a seven decade journey with the best in French fashion.
From old world legends like Jean Paul Gaultier, Balenciaga, Azzedine Alaïa, Christian Lacroix, Chanel to a newer crowd of creatives: Comme Des Garçon, Ann Demeulemeester, Martin Margiela, there is a designer for everyone. All the designers have archival gowns, some haven’t been seen since the runway, on display in the exhibition – starting from the 50s right through to 2013, all which has been organised by the decade for your convenience.
Fashion Icons opens to the public tomorrow, October 25 and runs until February 15. Adult tickets are $25 and concession is $15.
Be sure to see this once in a lifetime collection before it’s all over.
