As Adelaide Fringe season inches closer we’re gradually being treated to more and more confirmed acts, with regular big-hitting venue The Garden of Unearthly Delights rolling out the first six acts for their 2016 program. These shows are of the A-list variety – they’re not the one’s you’re going to be able to wander into on a whim as you take a stroll round the Garden, although there will undoubtedly be plenty of other more fringe-y Fringe shows announced down the track.
Frank Woodley – Noodlenut
Frank Woodley (of Lano & Fame) returns to Adelaide with a show that promises to be full of “wonderful nonsense” and have “children bursting with joy”. It will be a bit of a change from his rather bleak – though still hilarious – work in recent years.
iOTA – Wolf Number Nine
iOTA‘s new album Wolf Number Nine will be his first in almost a decade, and word on the street is that its “marvelously ridiculous”. If you don’t think you know iOTA, think again. He was the flame-thrower-guitar-playing Doof Warrior in the latest Mad Max movie. He’ll probably do some more conventional entertaining at the Garden, but you never know.
Rich Hall
Rich Hall is the surly southern winner of the Melbourne Comedy Festival Barry Award and the Edinburgh Fringe Perrier Award, and several episodes of Q.I. What you might not know is that he was also the inspiration for The Simpsons character Moe Szyslak.
Sam Simmons – Not A People Person
Multi-award winner (and winner of our hearts), Sam Simmons gave us all a heart attack when he said he was quitting triple j recently. It’s alright though, he’s coming to Adelaide with a brand new show (full of “gypsy cuddles” apparently), so you’ll be able to sup your fill of Simmons.
Sammy J and Randy Land
The Garden will once again play host to musical genius Sammy J and the world’s favorite lumpy purple monster puppet, Randy (sorry, Grimace). Randy is actually touring Adelaide in the very near future, so go and get your fix until the fringe rolls around.
PULPSHOW
Pulpshow describes itself as “part live art happening and part cabaret”. As your fringe calendar isn’t complete without at least one live art happening, and you suffer a depraved addiction to attending cabaret shows, this should do just the trick. Plus, it’s a fun take on weird-outback Australia, where “hitchhiking kills and dingoes eat babies”. Hey, it worked for a very successful musical a few years ago.
