Your guide to Adelaide New Year’s parties and gigs

Words by Walter Marsh December 30, 2015

Did you have an amazing 2015? Well, now it’s time to celebrate, look back on the year that was and toast to another great twelve months!

Or maybe 2015 was just the worst and you can’t wait to see the back of that douche of a year.

Either way, you’ll probably find what you’re looking for in bars and parties around the city! Here’s a rundown of some of the best Adelaide has to offer.

New Year’s Eve – Thursday, December 31

Elder Park New Year’s Eve
Elder Park

The Elder Park party is always a reliable, family friendly option that also gives you to easy access to whatever bars are open in the CBD to kick on later. This year’s spread includes The Memphis Suns, Lovers Electric, Wasted Wanderers, Gorilla Jones, Zkye Blue and More + More. Plus fireworks, obviously.

Golden Era New Years Eve
Zhivagos, 9.00pm

It’s been a big year for the Hilltop Hoods’ label, with big releases and accolades for Briggs, Funkoars and K21 along with the launch of a beer with Pirate Life Brewing expanding the empire into delicious new terrain. Celebrate with DJ sets from Trials, K21 and Faint One, plus Vents performing at the strike of 12.

Tickets via OzTix

Los Hedonistas feat. Telephones
Sugar, 9.00pm

After a rollercoaster of a year that included huge shows from the likes of Floating Points and Romare, talk of the club changing hands and then finally confirmation Sugar would continue to barrel ahead bigger than ever. They’ll be celebrating with Norwegian DJ and producer Telephones.

Bibliotheca Bar & Book Exchange
Bibliotheca Bar & Book Exchange, 8.00pm

While many of Adelaide’s small bar’s are shutting up shop over the Christmas period, Gresham Street bibliophiles Bibliotheca Bar & Book Exchange are throwing a steampunk themed party. Sure to be an intimate affair, tickets aren’t cheap, but do guarantee you unlimited house pours and food for much of the night.

Lucky’s Beach Club, 7.00pm

Eastern suburbs pop up venue Lucky’s Beach Club is nearing the end of its summer season before returning to its previous identity as “Maid & Magpie Car Park”. Prohibition Party
Distill, 7.00pm

Sure, New Year’s is usually about travelling forward in time, but nostalgic throwback parties can also be a blast. While there are a few 80s and 70s themed events around the place, this Prohibition era-inspired party will let you channel your inner flapper and party with the kind of whimsical abandon usually reserved the period right before a huge financial crash.

Exeter New Year’s Eve
The Exeter, 9.00pm

If it’s a pub New Year’s your after, you probably can’t do better than the Ex. They’re putting on a sumptuous lineup of Adelaide bands, from the strung out bush rock of The High Beamers to the Post-Pub-Rock monster that is Old Mate, along with Basty H and the Maraby Band.

Wolf of Rosina Street
Red Square, 9.00pm

Is Wolf Of Wall Street on track to become the new Great Gatsby when it comes to parties themed around vacuous displays of wealth and reckless, kinda illegal pursuit of decadent hedonism regardless of the human cost without acknowledging the hoppy notes of satire and condemnation lurking beneath the suits and flowing liquor? Nah, it’s probably nothing.

Transmission New Year’s Eve Party
Rhino Room, 9.00pm

Sometimes though, there’s nothing like getting sweaty in a dimly lit room and dancing so hard you completely miss the countdown. The folks at seemingly immortal club night Transmissionare bringing their usual blend of Britpop, triple j-friendly guitar rock and indie hits to Rhino Room.

Friday, January 1

Play New Years Eve
Adelaide Gaol, 11.30am

It’s not all ghost tours and zombie nights as the old Adelaide Gaol turns dance party for music festival Play New Year’s Day’s second year at the iconic building. The lineup so far includes the likes of Dash Berlin, Andy C, Sub Focus and Will Spark, and looks set to be a good time, not hard time.
