The Flash Collection by Iggy Pop

Words by October 22, 2014

Punk rock’s godfather and the world’s most consistently underdressed fashion icon Iggy Pop has dropped a new line of Americana stylings for Sailor Jerry Clothing. Iggy was sought out by Sailor Jerry to create for to their annual collaboration with a like-minded artist. His range, The Flash Collection by Iggy Pop, consists of his own go-to ensemble for all formal occasions: a belt + buckle combo topped with a denim vest. Inspired by ye olden days tattoo flash of Normal ‘Sailor Jerry’ Collins himself, this is Iggy’s first stab at designing a clothing range.

“I don’t always wanna feel like an artiste,” notes young master Osterberg in a video outlining the new collection. His objective was to vividly bring to life Collins’ flash art through clothing with an old school Americana aesthetic, riffing on outlaw bikie chic. A USA-made leather belt is offset by a hand-cast brass buckle emblazoned with a sea-breaching shark*, which Iggy says is a symbol of “power and individuality.” This is almost true in that 100 belts have been made.

La pièce de résistance is the deep indigo denim vest adorned with an anchor and the epitaph “Death Shall Triumph.” It comes with six flash art patches hand-picked by Pop. A limited edition of two score and ten vests will be produced, each personally signed by Iggy.

The above images of Iggy as lounge lizard in tropical oasis were taken by rock photographer god Mick Rock. Long-time colleague and comrade, Rock shot the cover of The StoogesRaw Power album, as well as that of Lou Reed’s Transformer, The RamonesEnd of the Century and this photo that somehow never caused the universe to implode:

Iggy follows last year’s SJ collaborator Paul Simonon of The Clash and Gorillaz.

The Flash Collection by Iggy Pop is available for a limited time on Sailor Jerry Clothing.

Check in with local SJ stockists Midwest Trader and Out of Step if you’re looking for something closer to home.

*Author’s note: I once touched Iggy’s arm skin and it felt like a shark.
