Introducing: The Collective

Words by Daniela Frangos May 29, 2015

After supporting local creatives through events like RAW, Don’t Let the Idea Die, and recently, Videogame, Producers Bar is introducing a new, multi-disciplinary night for Adelaide’s artistic community: The Collective.

The monthly event materialised from the Producers’ hardworking team – comprising Daria H-K, Dasha Romanowski and Lars Moller – in an effort to “liven up the East End in the quiet post-Fringe season.”

“We came up with the idea for an event that would feature a different organiser every month whose role will be to gather a group of artists based on a theme of their choice to keep the night versatile, fresh and forever changing,” Daria explains. “The cooperation in our powerhouse team meant that the first night came to life in only a matter of weeks.”

The Collective places an emphasis on collaboration, creation and accessibility, asking for applications and ideas from artists and curators across a range of backgrounds, interests and fields. “Anyone can get involved! We encourage as much diversity as possible since we’re trying to not just be a run-of-the-mill music or club night — we’re keen for fashion designers, makeup artists, craftspeople, filmmakers and anyone else that is interested to get on board,” Daria says. “This is such an exciting platform for the arts community to use to their advantage for exposure and networking, and we really want to make the most of it by keeping it as broad as possible.”

“The goal is to eventually build a database brimming with creatives that curators can pick and choose from to suit their night,” Dasha adds. “This also gives everyone involved an opportunity to network and make new friends and contacts. Ain’t that nice?” It sure is guys.

The first event, Who Run the World, takes place tonight and will shine a light on some of Adelaide’s female talent with performances from acoustic folk artist Seedling and bedroom producer Allume and sets from Nightcall and All Gold Everything DJs.

Dasha says the aim is to create a safe and inclusive space while expanding the support networks for Adelaide’s growing arts community. “While there are so many talented women artists and creatives in Adelaide with the number constantly on the rise, it’s sometimes hard to not get the vibe that some women aren’t getting as much exposure as they could be because certain subcultures and scenes are often very male-dominated,” she says.

“Collaborating and sharing ideas is very important to us, so we encourage women to approach us with suggestions on how we can make them feel like our events can be made more inclusive. It’s also important for us to stress that while we’re trying our hardest to create a safe space for women, we welcome people of any gender to contribute to our event. We’re pushing for a space that is driven by mutual respect, kindness and cooperation.”

Daria acknowledges that creating an inclusive space requires more than words. She says the team has worked hard to ensure everyone feels welcome and encouraged at The Collective events. “Saying that we don’t want to be a cliquey environment comes with a great responsibility in trying to live up to this statement. It would be great for people who come to create networks with each other, collaborate, talk, and possibly even host a future Collective night. Having a different curator each time ensures that the night is not dominated by one niche,” she says.

“We hope that everyone can enter a comfortable environment, not really knowing what to expect but be excited about whose paths they may cross. We want this to be a night where everyone is very respectful, where people can dance like Peter Garrett and receive a round of applause. We are in a day and age where everyone judges each other so easily. Let’s accept one another, celebrate life and the beautiful creative world around us.”
