Julian Clary has been announced as the the 2016 Adelaide Fringe Festival Ambassador. In a statement, Clary said:
“Australians have such a brilliant sense of humour and I’m thrilled to be coming Down Under! Adelaide audiences especially appreciate comedy and Adelaide Fringe has a fantastic reputation, so it’s an honour to be offered the opportunity to further boost it internationally.”
In past years, the honorary title has been bestowed upon icons like Kitty Flanagan and Paul Mcdermott, and passes this year to the British comic. Here’s a clip of him talking with 90s bad boy Andrew Denton.
Turns out it was cool to make Bronwyn Bishop jokes then, too! Odd, vaguely transphobic jokes, but still!
Julian Clary has many adoring fans, and has regularly toured to Adelaide in the past. No word yet on this news from Peter Goers, who famously once wrote: “I had terrible seats for Julian Clary’s show… Unfortunately the seats faced the stage.”
This is shaping up to be a great Fringe.
The Adelaide Fringe runs February to March next year. Tickets to some shows are already on sale.
