Lessons we’ve learnt from TRADE*LAIDE

Words by James McCann July 29, 2015

TRADE*LAIDE is a huge Adelaide-based Facebook group where people trade stuff for other stuff. It’s essentially The Trading Post except no money is used, and there are far more instances where you’ll want to “tell ’em they’re dreamin’”.

Also, word to the wise, it is not to be confused with Tradelaide – The Adelaide Latin Mass Community.

There are HEAPS of things people are trying to trade. Some of them are normal (dresses, electric organs and tables feature the most commonly) but there are some bewilderingly strange items on offer too.

Here’s the strangest and most valuable life lessons we’ve gleaned from TRADE*LAIDE so far.

1. A changing room tent can double as a perfectly good wildlife enclosure

2. There are some wonderful, generous people in Adelaide

…and some terrifying ones too

Cat burglar? Pussy Riot member in hiding? Person auditioning for Spider-Man 2?

3. It is actually impossible to imagine a car of more interest than this one

4. There seems to be a running banana joke about using bananas for scale on TRADE*LAIDE

5. ‘Top quality’ does not necessarily mean ‘unstained by compost’

6. Skulls are more popular than one might think

7. But the legality of buying them is a grey area. Luckily there’s no money involved here, right??

8. Not just human skulls. This one ended up trading for a curry:

9. There seems to be a small war going on as to whether the banana thing is funny:

10. The compliment trade was a nice idea

Until it rapidly and inexplicably became people posting pictures of their cats

And now people are complimenting the cats

11. The baby prison industrial complex is thriving

12. But most importantly, now is a good time to invest in Salt Lamps

Heaps of people want them…

… and will make some generous offers

Even the neighbourhood cat burglar has one:

BUT BEWARE! BEWARE SALT LAMPS!

13. Luckily, the trading community has your safety covered.
