Planets will align, the full moon will rise and all the arts will come out to play in a new collaborative event being spun by the mad geniuses at The Mill and The Happy Motel.
Tickets go on sale today for Nebula Deluxe – an immersive, no-holds-barred cosmic playground, set in the ethereal surrounds of the Adelaide Bicentennial Conservatory. It’s a two-night affair, celebrating July’s blue moon (second full moon phase within a month). Nebula Deluxe will have its first session on July 31 and the next on August 1. The moon will be in full flourish at 8.12pm on the 31st, after which it will begin the slow waning process.
“It all started with looking at a planetary dome as a venue, because it’s a really fun space,” explains Amber Cronin from The Mill. “As we were looking at the planetary dome, we started thinking about immersive cinema – which is where ATLAS comes into it.
“ATLAS is an immersive cinematic experience between eight artists who are collaborating on three different pieces of short, cinematic work. It’s a soundscape that goes along with a visual interpretation of the artists’ work in a cinematic, 3-d experience.”
Yes, we’ll take one of those, please.
The Happy Motel’s Jordan Jeavons says that plans for Nebula Deluxe have been in the works for “23 years”, since they discovered that Jupiter and Venus were to cross paths, or for about a month. Cronin simply says that it “had a lot to do with the full moon”.
The celestial influence has led to a one-of-a-kind event being staged in the rarely used Conservatory. Like all events with The Mill’s unique fingerprint, Nebula Deluxe will be a melting pot of interactive arts from all disciplines.
Expect dance, theatre, cinema, music, visual arts … tarot reading and moon-themed karaoke (and there’s The Happy Motel’s unique fingerprint).
“We’re always trying to bring things that people wouldn’t normally interact with into the equation when we do events,” says Cronin. “So all-new experiences – things that people haven’t seen or been a part of before.”
This will culminate in the ATLAS planetarium dome, where immersive cinema and more will capture punters’ attention and imagination.
The Happy Motel have brought along some friends – Clever Little Tailor’s new sibling Pink Moon Saloon are on the bill to sling cocktails, alongside brews from Young Henry’s.
Tickets to the event are $80, and include a grazing dinner, cocktails, wine, and wild new works of theatre, dance and cinema. Yes, you may be required to participate. Soz, hermits.
