Phone clock glitch causes wave of accidental sleep ins around Adelaide

Words by Anna Mazzone October 20, 2015

If you woke up in a sea of confusion this morning to discover that it was somehow already 8.50am and your alarm hadn’t gone off hours earlier on your dependable iPhone alarm, then you’re not alone.

Some of us ran to the bus stop, half-dressed and fully panicked, emailing colleagues, cursing Steve Jobs and soon wondering why the bus timetable was completely off time (more so than usual). And some of us checked any other time-telling device at home, like a regular clock, and realised it was just the time zone on your phone that had mysteriously changed.

Unique to Optus users, the comments quickly began appearing on the provider’s Facebook page:

Optus-Time-1
Optus-Time-2

Reddit was the same.

Optus-Time-3

But luckily most were able to get about their day without issue. Like this person whose December 18 plans were almost thrown into disarray.

Tragedy averted!

According to Optus an “overnight maintenance upgrade of the Optus 4G Plus mobile network caused some devices in South Australia and the Northern Territory to switch to a different time zone earlier this morning”. While the Optus 3G network was unaffected, it left many customers frantically panicking that they’d overslept before realising they were still early.

Or on the other hand, they just slept right on through and actually became late.

While technicians for the company have added a fix to resolve the issue, the company advise the error can also be remedied by:

– Turning flight mode on and off

– Turning automatic clock settings off and on

– Turning their device off and on.

A similar scene occurred in Queensland earlier this year when many phones switched to Daylight Savings time, leaving traffic uncharacteristically bustling and office workers turning up to work early.

A bit of a shock to start the morning, sure, but for the lucky few who initially woke in a panic only to end up actually running early for work? That’s almost a lucky break!
