“O, beware, my lord, of jealousy;
It is the green-ey’d monster, which doth mock the meat it feeds on.”
With a fast-paced, adrenaline-fuelled take on Shakespeare’s tragedy Othello, followed by an after-party out under the stars, you’ll be more than jealous if you miss State Theatre’s final Red Carpet Party for 2014.
Othello, newly and secretly married to Desdemona, daughter of the Senator Brabantio, is appointed leader of a military operation to depend Cyprus from the Turks. Iago, his ensign who has been passed over for promotion in favour of the younger and less experienced Cassio, persuades Othello that Cassio and Desdemona are having an affair. Swiftly, the violent engine of jealousy is set in motion.
State Theatre’s Othello is a vivid depiction of racial tension, domestic violence, the fog of war and the thin membrane that separates love and jealousy. In her main stage debut, Director Nescha Jelk will frame Shakespeare’s tragic text in a desert wartime setting that echoes current global conflicts. This Othello will be instantly familiar to today’s audiences; highlighting the timelessness of Shakespeare’s tale of obsession, race and misogyny.
For the first time, the after-party will be held at Blue Hive on the Riverbank Promenade, next to Adelaide Festival Centre. Following the performance, kick on at an exclusive after-party with cast and crew, open bar, snacks and music guaranteed to get you dancing until the wee hours.
TREv members can get their mits on a Performance + Party Pass for just $45. See trev.org.au for details.
