Naked Girls Reading

5 5

Naked Girls Reading is exactly what the title says — four women, sitting on stage wearing absolutely nothing and reading excerpts from books. Presented by local burlesque performer Luna Eclipse, the show is a three-night run, each night with a different theme. Opening night is entitled ‘Just the Naughty Bits’, and features everything from Harry Potter to Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

On Thursday night, Luna Eclipse is joined by Adelaide entertainers Nona Mona and Lady Cara Louise, and Canadian academic and performer Thea Fitz-James. The ladies file in and disrobe immediately; there is no awkwardness here.

La Bohème, intimate and dimly lit, is the perfect venue for this type of performance. The show flows naturally, and feels like it is over too quickly. Each performer has brought their own well-chosen readings, and the ladies come equipped with hilarious accents and voices to add to the effect. Their quips and laughter in-between (and during) their readings make the show feel so natural that you occasionally forget they’re nude. In a world where women’s bodies are decidedly sexualised, this is a refreshing change.

Naked Girls Reading continues at La Bohème until Saturday, March 12.
