Dumb Things Paul Kelly Tribute

Paul Kelly Tribute – Dumb Things

4 4

Dumb Things is an ensemble tribute act which does Paul Kelly justice.

The ensemble consists of seven of Adelaide’s most exciting young singer-songwriter talents, reprising the most well-loved songs of the iconic Australian singer. The set list is masterfully structured, oscillating effortlessly between classic rock numbers and ambient pieces. Each of these emerging musicians are multi-talented, and shift around the stage like a carousel at the end of each song, exchanging instruments, passing drumsticks, readjusting microphones, and pulling harmonicas out of nowhere.

I confess that my knowledge of Paul Kelly’s music is minimal at best – and yet the show made me feel warm and nostalgic, as though I had been raised on his repertoire. These musicians are so joyous in their performances, so obviously admiring of Kelly and honoured to be able to deliver their takes on his work. Their energy reflected all too quickly in the audience, where heads were voraciously nodding and women were standing up to dance in the aisle.

The best moment for me was the encore performance – an a cappella tribute to Meet Me in the Middle of the Air which left each breath hitched and each hair standing on its end.

Dumb Things is a night out well worth it, for Kelly fans and novices alike.

Paul Kelly Tribute – Dumb Things continues for two more shows at The Wheatsheaf Hotel, both Sunday March 6.
