Untapped

3.5 3.5

A Raw Dance Company performance, Untapped delivers up tap and beatboxing with a host of seasoned performers that captivate the audience from start to finish. Fresh off a tour in New York, Untapped is a mesh of styles packed into an energetic 60 minutes, relying on their talents and charming (but occasionally cringe-inducing) Aussie humour to lead the show.

The five performers are led by dance captain and co-choreographer Jack Chambers, a household name in the Australian performing arts industry. The dancers are all quality performers, each bringing their own personality to the stage. The standout piece is the Flamenco-inspired number featuring Chambers and performer Sally Hare, a mesmerising dance that albeit seems a little out-of-place with the rest of the show. At one point, thongs and flippers replace the dancers’ tap shoes for a few hilarious numbers that are surprisingly well-executed.

Beatboxer Genesis also puts on a stellar show, and at one point brings a young boy up onto the stage to learn a few tricks about beatboxing. This segment does feel a little heavy-handed as the kid is quickly sent off stage after a few minutes of repeating whatever Genesis does. This aside, the show is a solid undertaking by some of Australia’s standout tap dance artists. It’s definitely no traditional tap performance, and the dancers do an amazing job at showcasing tap to a younger audience.

Untapped continues at Garden of Unearthly Delights — The Vagabond until Sunday, March 13.
