Fat Tuesday Street Carnival joins Fringe opening

Words by Anna Mazzone February 9, 2016

The carnival celebrations of Mardi Gras, also referred to as Fat Tuesday, signify the final indulgence of rich, fatty foods before a ritual period of fasting. The East End of Adelaide will be gorging in creole cuisine and deep southern eats with the first Fat Tuesday Street Carnival next week.

Held on the opening night of the Fringe – in true Adelaide festival-overload fashion – this Fat Tuesday celebration will mark the beginning of our festival season, rather than the fasting of fun.

Helping to transform Vardon Avenue into a New Orleanean French Quarter are district neighbours NOLA Adelaide, Mother Vine, East End Cellars and Exchange Specialty Coffee. The street carnival will offer everything from Southern American food and drinks, live jazz and NOLA DJ sets from The Atlantic Street Band and looping legend Adam Page.

NOLA co-owner, Oliver Brown, hopes to make the Fat Tuesday Street Carnival a regular event. “We really wanted to create a night that kicks off Fringe festivities and brings the celebrations out into all of the East End,” says Brown.

“NOLA Adelaide has been so warmly welcomed onto Vardon Avenue by surrounding businesses like East End Cellars and Exchange Coffee. Fat Tuesday Street Carnival is our way of continuing to showcase the best of the East End and make Vardon Avenue a destination at all times of the day and night.”

“This will be the first night-time event on the street and we hope to produce more in the future that will bring the local community together to feast and be festive.”

Street dwellers can expect to get their hands on NOLA’s signature Kickin’ Chicken and Fried Green Tomatoes, East End Cellars’ jamón and charcuterie delights, and the holy trinity of cajun cooking, jambalaya.

“We’ll have food stalls cooking up live in front of patrons and are bringing GoUD Fringe acts in to roam and entertain,” says event manager Chloe Reschke-Maguire of The Pop-Up Co.

“We’ll be transforming the East End into our own little french quarter of New Orleans on the night, packed with some great local jazz bands and DJs who’ll be performing at the Adelaide Fringe, creole food and quirky craft beer and hurricane bars.”

Fat Tuesday Street Carnival will be held on Friday February 12, from 5.00pm until late.
