Tucked off Pirie Street, Fiefy’s Specialty Café has been a popular CBD coffee destination for half a decade. Now owner Sineenart (Fiefy) Anuwatanaphorn has cast the net a little wider (emphasis on ‘little’) with a new second outpost closer to the heart of the CBD.
“Five years ago when we started, obviously back then we were the second or third specialty café in the CBD. Now they’re everywhere,” Fiefy tells ripitup.com.au. After five years in the game she’s appreciative of the evolving – and now a little bit more discerning – tastes of Adelaide coffee drinkers that have driven the boom of specialty coffee spots and on-premises roasters.
Although the original Fiefy’s sits in a thoroughfare just removed from the main public transport artery of Grenfell Street, the new Flinders Street outpost is nestled deeper within the city’s central office belt. This is lanyard country, sure, but the simple and colourful café is welcoming enough for anyone who isn’t a State Government employee to grab a relaxed brew as well. Provided you’re not caught in the mad rush before 9.00am departmental briefings, at least.
Owner Fiefy doing her thing
Fiefy’s 2.0 is, in many respects, a perfect twin to the original, with a simple food menu allowing the main, caffeinated product to take pride of place. The simple aesthetic of Pirie Street is easily translated to the sleeker, office building setting, with the bright blues and wall of paper takeaway cups adding a relaxed, quirky energy to surroundings.
The consistency of coffee has also been carefully retained, but the team plan to take advantage of the potential for experimentation the new expansion offers. Flinders Street has been quick to include cold drip among its new offerings, with a plan to explore different varieties of coffee down the track.
“At the end of the day I think obviously the coffee industry is much better now, it’s improved a lot,” she says. “Customers used to drink very hot coffee or take three to four sugars,” she says. “It’s definitely changed now. People now do care about what they’re drinking, they’re after a good cup of coffee, and don’t mind walking a bit further to find it.”
