New Order, Bon Iver, Anohni to headline Sydney’s Vivid LIVE

Words by Walter Marsh March 17, 2016

Start looking up plane tickets online folks, because the 2016 Vivid LIVE lineup has landed and it’s kind of a doozy.

The annual musical spinoff of Sydney’s Vivid Festival has frequently boasted big names like Sufjan Stevens, Daniel Johns and TV On The Radio, and this year’s shaping up to be of a similarly high caliber. Electronic post-rock pioneers New Order will headline the event, having just released their tenth album Music Complete last year. The band, which famously spun off from Joy Division in the wake of frontman Ian Curtis’ death, will perform as part of a four night retrospective residency that includes two nights in collaboration with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

Justin Vernon will also dust off his increasingly elusive Bon Iver project in a rare Australian performance. Vernon and band will perform many of Bon Iver’s biggest songs over four nights in a new show dubbed ‘Cercle’. The band last toured Australia in 2012 on the back of sophomore album Bon Iver, Bon Iver.

Having made her way down to Australia last year to headline Tasmania’s Dark Mofo, Anohni (Antony & The Johnsons) will return for Vivid with her new work Hopelessness, an electronic album produced in collaboration with Hudson Mohawke and Brooklyn producer Oneohtrix Point Never. Who, incidentally, is also slated to appear in a single performance.

Portland jazz bassist Esperanza Spalding will perform her latest album Emily’s D+Evolution in her first ever Australian performance. Spalding took out the Best New Artist Grammy, and will finally make her Australian debut a decade after her first album.

On the Australian front, Melbourne’s own Grammy-nominated neo-soul outfit Hiatus Kaiyote will perform alongside Sampa The Great, with appearances from Tiny Ruins, Ta-Ku and Wafia and Holly Throsby and Sally Seltmann also sure to be highlights.

The program also features a live taping of popular music podcast Song Exploder, with host Hrishikesh Hirway interviewing an as-yet-unannounced Vivid act and pulling apart one of their iconic songs. He’s the guy whose unpacked hit songs by Björk, U2 and The National, and earlier this year had Courtney Barnett reveal her song Depreston is actually about an experience in neighbouring suburb Coburg.

Vivid Live runs from May 27 – June 13 at the Sydney Opera House, details here.
