Spider-Man fans have been given their first official look at the newest big screen incarnation of the webslinger in the latest trailer for Captain America: Civil War.
It’s the first glimpse of the character since Sony gave creative control of the character to competitor Marvel after the creative misfire of the two Andrew Garfield-led Amazing Spider-Man films. Now Marvel have rebooted Spidey and inducted him into existing Cinematic Universe, making his debut in Civil War before a solo picture for Sony (with the understanding that both studios will make more $pider-ca$h this way).
Like the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Civil War tackles that looming question brought up by recent superhero films: their tendency to flatten highly populated cities with presumably countless offscreen civilian casualties.
So although Robert Downey, Jr.’s Tony Stark is increasingly becoming the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s resident douchebag-in-chief, you can’t really blame him for welcoming oversight. But then again, given the events of the last Captain America movie that revealed S.H.I.E.L.D. had been infiltrated by bad guys Hyrda, Cap’s wariness for external authorities is also kind of warranted.
But that’s all small potatoes. The big reveal of the trailer is reserved for the final few seconds, when new actor Tom Holland’s Spider-Man comes swinging out of the sky. At first look, it’s an interesting take on the character that’s way more cartoony than previous iterations. Seriously, he looks a lot like the 1960s cartoon-come-meme.
At any rate, somewhere that poor schmuck Garfield just shut his laptop real hard and stared into the distance.
